Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital twin technology, AI-assisted analysis, and automated monitoring systems are moving from innovation to standard practice across many engineering disciplines.

The emergence of digital engineering does not diminish the importance of core engineering understanding — if anything, it elevates it. Engineers who understand the physical and analytical principles underlying their discipline are better equipped to use digital tools effectively, interpret their outputs critically, and identify when automated systems are producing erroneous results.

Digital transformation creates new competence requirements that engineers must address through structured development. These include data literacy — the ability to interpret, interrogate, and draw valid conclusions from engineering data; digital tool proficiency across discipline-relevant platforms; cyber-physical systems understanding; and awareness of the risks and limitations of automated and AI-driven engineering tools.
Implications for Professional Development
CPD programmes that do not address digital engineering competence are increasingly inadequate. BSAPE encourages engineers to actively develop their digital capabilities as part of a balanced CPD plan, whilst maintaining and deepening their foundational engineering knowledge.
