Our International Approach
Engineering Experience Accredited on Its Merit, Not Its Origin
BSAPE does not require engineers to have worked in the UK to be eligible for certification. Engineering is a global profession, and a reservoir engineer who has spent 15 years with a major Middle East operator has demonstrably as strong — or stronger — a foundation for BSAPE certification as their UK equivalent.
Our Technical Advisory Committees include engineers who have worked across multiple countries and who are qualified to assess international engineering experience against BSAPE's published standards.
BSAPE certification is currently held by engineers in over 30 countries. The certification carries internationally recognisable credential marks and is publicly verifiable through our online credential register.
All Experience Considered Equally
Whether you have worked for a North Sea operator, a Gulf NOC, or an Australian LNG project, the same certification criteria apply. There is no 'UK-only' requirement.
Prior Certification Accreditation
Engineers holding prior certifications from recognised international bodies (SPE, IADC, IWCF, IChemE, IMechE, IEAust, etc.) may apply for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).
Online Application — No Travel Required
All BSAPE certification applications are processed online via the BSAPE portal. Interviews, where required, are conducted via video conference.
Internationally Portable Certificate
Your BSAPE certificate includes your credential marks, certificate type, discipline, and a QR code linked to your online credential record — verifiable from anywhere.
Employer Recognition Globally
BSAPE works with operators and contractors globally to promote awareness of BSAPE certification. Corporate group applications are available for companies with multiple applicants.
International Assessors
BSAPE maintains a panel of approved assessors with international experience. Applications from engineers in major petroleum regions are assessed by panel members familiar with those contexts.
By Region
Where BSAPE Members Work
BSAPE certified engineers are active across the world's major energy markets. The following regions are particularly well represented in the BSAPE member community.
United Kingdom & North Sea
BSAPE is a UK-registered professional body headquartered in Scotland. BSAPE certification is directly applicable to engineers working under UK regulatory frameworks, including the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) under NSTA regulation.
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia operates the world's largest hydrocarbon reserves. BSAPE accepts Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and related operator and contractor experience in full for certification assessment.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE hosts a major oil and gas sector (ADNOC) and a rapidly expanding renewable energy programme. Experience at ADNOC, ENEC, and UAE contractors is assessed on a direct equivalent basis.
Qatar
Qatar holds the world's largest LNG infrastructure. BSAPE accepts QatarEnergy (LNG, offshore, onshore) and contractor experience. The LNG-specific process engineering scope is well-served by BSAPE-CE.
Egypt
Egypt has an active petroleum and process engineering sector including Mediterranean offshore operations. BSAPE accepts experience from EGPC-affiliated operators, as well as independent operators in the Western Desert.
Nigeria
Nigeria is sub-Saharan Africa's largest petroleum producer. BSAPE accepts experience from NNPCL, Shell, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Nigerian independent operators for petroleum and offshore engineering certification.
Malaysia & Southeast Asia
Malaysia hosts Petronas, one of the largest integrated energy companies globally. Southeast Asian petroleum, LNG, and offshore experience is accepted for BSAPE certification assessment.
Norway & Continental Europe
The Norwegian Continental Shelf operates under Petroleum Safety Authority (Ptil) regulation. BSAPE accepts Norwegian and European petroleum, offshore, and process engineering experience and acknowledges Petroleum Safety Authority standards.
Australia & New Zealand
Australia's offshore and LNG sector is among the world's most technically demanding. BSAPE accepts experience from Woodside, Santos, Chevron, Shell, and Australian petroleum operators for certification assessment.
India
India's growing petroleum and process engineering sector includes ONGC, Reliance, and a large engineering services workforce. BSAPE assesses Indian engineering experience against the same standard applied internationally.
Canada & United States
North American petroleum and renewable energy engineering experience is accepted for BSAPE assessment. Engineers from Alberta oil sands, deepwater Gulf of Mexico, and LNG sectors regularly apply for BSAPE certification.
Kuwait, Bahrain & Oman
GCC petroleum operators including KPC, Bapco, and OQ are well-established in the BSAPE applicant community. Engineering experience from GCC national oil companies is assessed on full equivalence.
Accreditation of Prior Learning
Already Hold an Engineering Certification?
Engineers who hold prior professional certifications from recognised international engineering bodies may be eligible for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL). BSAPE considers APL on a case-by-case basis.
SPE — Society of Petroleum Engineers
Registered members with significant experience may be considered for direct BSAPE certification assessment.
IWCF / IADC — Well Control Certificates
Holders of current IWCF or IADC well control certificates may apply for BSAPE-DE APL at the corresponding certificate type.
IChemE — Institution of Chemical Engineers
Chartered Chemical Engineers may be considered for BSAPE certification via an APL route.
IMechE / IET — UK Professional Engineering Institutions
CEng holders may be eligible for direct BSAPE certification assessment depending on discipline alignment.
Engineers Australia / Engineering New Zealand
CPEng holders and Chartered Engineers from Australasian institutions may be eligible for APL.
Online Credential Register
Every BSAPE certification is entered in the public BSAPE online register, verifiable from anywhere in the world. Employers, operators, and regulators can confirm the status of any BSAPE certified engineer instantly.
Apply for BSAPE Certification — Wherever You Are in the World
International applications are processed through the same online portal. Review times are typically 30 working days from submission.
