Why Drilling Engineering Matters
The Industry's Highest-Consequence Certification
Well control failures are among the most catastrophic events in the extractive industries. A blowout can result in multiple fatalities, environmental damage measured in decades, and financial consequences in the billions. Certification in well control is not optional — it is the legal and ethical minimum for anyone with influence over a live well.
BSAPE's Drilling Engineering Certification Programme (BSAPE-DE) provides a structured 5-level framework covering everyone from site support personnel to qualified instructors. Each level is mapped to a specific role and responsibility scope, ensuring that certification reflects real operational accountability.
BSAPE-DE certificates are issued with full online verifiability. Operators, contractors, and regulators can confirm the currency and level of any holder's certification via the BSAPE public register.
5-Level Programme
From Awareness (DE-1) to Instructor Certification (DE-5), covering all roles with operational influence over a drilling well.
Role-Specific Certification
Each level is scoped to a defined set of operational responsibilities. Assessment confirms practical application, not just knowledge.
Internationally Applicable
BSAPE-DE standards are aligned with international well control industry practice and applicable across onshore, offshore, and HPHT environments.
Online Credential Verification
Every BSAPE-DE certificate is publicly verifiable at app.bomeqp.com/verify-certificate, providing operators with immediate confirmation of holder status.
2-Year Recertification Cycle
Drilling engineering certification is maintained through a 2-year refresher cycle. BSAPE tracks recertification status and issues renewal notifications to holders.
Delivered via Approved Providers
BSAPE-DE is delivered exclusively through BSAPE-assessed and approved training providers who meet BSAPE's quality assurance framework.
The BSAPE-DE Framework
5-Level Drilling Engineering Certification
Each level is designed for a specific role and operational scope. Candidates must hold lower-level certification before progressing — though prior IWCF or equivalent may be considered by BSAPE.

Sector Applicability
Applicable Across the Drilling & Energy Spectrum
BSAPE-DE is not limited to conventional oil and gas. The certification standard applies wherever wellbore pressure management is a safety-critical requirement.
Oil & Gas — Onshore
Land drilling, workover operations, and completion activities across onshore hydrocarbon plays. Applicable to rotary, top-drive, and workover rig environments.
Offshore & Deepwater
Fixed platform, semi-submersible, and drillship operations. Specific modules address deepwater BOP systems, riser management, and high-pressure environments.
HPHT Operations
High-pressure, high-temperature wells require specialist certification in advanced kill calculations, specialist casing, and non-standard barrier configurations.
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal well construction shares significant technical overlap with oil and gas well control. BSAPE-DE programmes apply to geothermal drilling environments.
Carbon Capture & Storage
CCS injection wells require rigorous well integrity and barrier management consistent with BSAPE Drilling Engineering standards for permanent well management.
Abandonment & Decommissioning
Plug-and-abandon operations require certified well control proficiency. The DE-4 Supervisor level is the minimum standard for P&A operations management.

Assessment Methodology
How BSAPE-DE Certification is Assessed
Written Examination
Multiple-choice and short-answer examinations test theoretical understanding of well control principles. Minimum pass mark: 70%. Examinations are proctored by the approved provider.
Practical Assessment
DE-2 through DE-4 include a practical assessment element using BOP training equipment or certified well control simulators. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in shut-in and kill procedures.
Simulator Assessment (DE-3 & DE-4)
Advanced levels include simulator-based scenario assessments to evaluate decision-making under pressure. Simulators must meet BSAPE's approved specifications.
Portfolio Review (DE-5)
The Instructor Certification includes a structured portfolio of evidence demonstrating instructional experience, and a moderated live delivery assessment observed by a BSAPE assessor.
Entry Requirements
Who Can Enrol
No prior experience required. Suitable for all personnel entering well site environments.
Minimum 6 months' relevant operational experience, or concurrent enrolment in a qualifying engineering programme. DE-1 not required but recommended.
DE-2 certification (or accepted equivalent) plus minimum 12 months' experience in drilling operations. Offshore experience preferred.
DE-3 certification plus minimum 3 years' drilling supervisory experience, or 5 years' engineering experience with direct well responsibility.
DE-4 certification plus 5 years' senior drilling experience and evidence of training delivery. Approval by BSAPE Instructor Certification Panel required.
Prior Learning Accreditation
Holders of IWCF, IADC, or equivalent internationally recognised well control certificates may apply to BSAPE for accreditation of prior learning (APL). Assessment is conducted on a case-by-case basis.
